What is an Intranet?
Web Technology was originally designed and built to support use of the worldwide Internet - the World Wide Web as we have come to know it. But many companies have now realised that they can use the same technology, within their own organisation, to publish information and make services available to their staff. These internal networks, based on Local Area Networks (LANs) and running Web technology, are isolated from the outside world and so are termed Intranets, a term that reflects the fact that they are intended for private use within an organisation, rather than between organisations.
Of course, most companies want to be able to use the World Wide Web as well. This is achieved by adding a secure gateway to the LAN. Through this gateway an organisation can access the web with security features in place, termed a firewall, to protect their internal network from attack over the Internet.
